The Certificate is offered through Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Toronto, in partnership with CarriersEdge. To qualify for the Certificate, participants must complete 8 courses:
1. How To Start A Small Business
The basics for someone interested in starting a business (e.g. company driver looking to become o/o). Includes forms of ownership/structure, financing, goal setting, personal skills, management needs and business plan.
2. Human Relations
Outlines HR basics such as motivation, conflict resolution, importance of training and development, leadership fundamentals, change management.
3. Small Business Bookkeeping
An introduction to finance for small businesses, including understanding P/L, income statements, balance sheets.
4. Border Crossing
Understanding current Can/US border regulations and documentation requirements (for drivers), where to go and what to do when crossing the border.
5. Defensive Driving
Best practices for safe driving, including speed & space, turns & curves, backing up, lane changes, adverse conditions, and more.
6. Pretrip, HOS & Logbooks
Current requirements for logging in both Canada and US, trip planning and inspections, tips and tricks for drivers working cross-border.
7. Cargo Securement
Load securement requirements, following the North American Standard.
8. Transportation of Dangerous Goods
Canadian regulations for transporting hazmat.
The first three courses are offered through Humber's Open Learning Centre. The remaining five courses are offered through CarriersEdge.
The Humber courses are offered in each semester (i.e. 3 times a year). CarriersEdge courses are available on demand. Courses can be completed in any order, so drivers can complete the program in a calendar year by taking one Humber course each semester and the CarriersEdge courses in between. |
