Defensive
Driving |
Professional drivers are held to a higher standard on the road
and part of that standard includes practicing defensive driving
techniques. This course will provide drivers with some reminders
of basic vehicle operation and then present a variety of defensive
driving techniques. Practices such as entering an intersection,
backing up and safe following distance will be demonstrated using
text, narration, animation, and quiz questions for reinforcement.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe responsibilities of being a professional driver
- List ways to maximize driver performance
- Describe best practices during basic handling activities
such as turning, braking and stopping a vehicle
- Describe how to correctly enter an intersection
- List the steps in safely changing lanes
- Explain how to determine and establish a safe following
distance
- List ways to handle adverse driving conditions such as night
time, rain, ice and fog

Hours
of Service & Logbooks |
This course covers the Regulations for Hours of Service with
daily log examples and typical scenarios to accompany the log entries.
Topics address log requirements, duty cycles, the sleeper berth
exception, and various other areas drivers deal with on a daily
basis. The importance of pre-trip planning and inspection regulations
are emphasized.
This course is available in different versions, including US
regulations, Canadian regulations, and a combined Canada-US version.
The combined version includes additional comparison charts to
highlight the differences between the two countries.
At the end of this course, you will be able to accurately:
- List information needed to plan a trip and maximize fuel
efficiency
- Explain the importance of pre-trip and daily inspections
- Describe the responsibilities of everyone involved in an
inspection
- List the main components of an inspection report
- Explain the importance of Hours of Service (HOS) Regulations
- List the hour restrictions for duty types
- Fill out a complete and correct daily log

Cargo
Securement |
This course introduces the North American Cargo Securement Standards,
including the importance of cargo securement, the primary components
of a cargo securement system, and the correct use of each component.
Content in this course is based on the North American Cargo Securement
Standard (49 CFR 393.100 & 393.136 and Canadian NSC Standard
10).
After completing this course, participants will be able to accurately:
- Describe the effects and hazards of poor cargo securement
- Describe each of the forces that act on cargo in a moving
vehicle
- Explain the Cargo Securement Standard, its exceptions and
general requirements
- Describe the responsibilities of both the driver and carrier
in securing cargo
- Describe how vehicle structure, securing devices and/or
blocking/bracing equipment can be used in a securement system
- Explain specific procedures for cargo with a tendency to
roll or tip
- Define the Working Load Limit (WLL) and Aggregate Working
Load Limit (AWLL)

Crossing – Canada/U.S. |
This course provides professional drivers with an overview of
the Canada - U.S. border, cross-border shipment requirements, and
best practices for border crossing in either direction. Programs
such as PARS, PAPS, and FAST are covered, along with tips and best
practices for crossing the smoothly.
After completing this course, participants will be able to accurately:
- Identify the importance of the cross-border trucking industry
- Describe the role of the key players in cross-border shipments
- Name some of the programs in place to improve security and
speed up the border crossing process
- Explain the PARS/PAPS process
- Describe the role of the driver in taking a FAST shipment
across the border
- List the requirements for Customs pre-notification when
transporting shipments both southbound and northbound across
the Canada - U.S. border
- Explain what drivers can and cannot do as Temporary Visitors
for Business in the U.S. and Canada
- List the personal identification that a driver should have
to cross the border
- Describe the shipment documentation that a driver needs
to have ready for Customs officials

Transportation
of Dangerous Goods – Canadian Regulations |
This course provides drivers with the necessary skills to find
and apply required information in the TDG Clear Language Regulations.
An explanation of the various schedules, the required safety marks
(placards), and emergency response procedures are also included.
After completing this course, participants will be able to accurately:
- Identify possible hazards for each class of dangerous goods
- Locate information from Schedules 1, 2 and 3 for a given
dangerous good
- Identify appropriate locations of a shipping document during
transport
- Determine the accuracy of a given shipping document
- Identify standard types of means of containment
- Determine if different dangerous goods are compatible and
safe to transport together
- Determine the correct safety marks for specific dangerous
goods
- Identify safe handling and loading procedures for dangerous
goods
- Locate information in the Emergency Response Guidebook for
specific dangerous goods
- Use appropriate procedures after an accidental release of
dangerous goods
